I will start this article by thanking Mr. Varnerin for responding to an email I sent to the Town Council last week concerning the decision not to reappoint Liza as Town Administrator. After almost two years of BOE members openly admitting they don’t read parent emails or having the personal experience of hearing BOE members accusing parents of bad actions with no evidence in public forums, it’s refreshing to hear back from someone you disagree with in public office put together a coherent response that isn’t dripping with cringe level self-victimization. So I’m going to give respect where it’s due.
Now to the more challenging part. In his response to my email, Mr. Varnerin writes:
“I take my role on Town Council and my fiduciary responsibilities very seriously.”
This is hard to believe coming from someone who openly supports, will likely run with, and is often, if not always, aligned with Ms. Kingsley who was part of a Town Council that hid a multi-million-dollar increase on the Municipal Monstrosity from the public until her party won a primary. That same project is the gift that keeps on giving- in a cold sore kind of way.
And when you combine this statement with another one:
“I do understand your position regarding Ms. Vianna is based on the information currently in the public space and am confident that additional facts will surface over the coming weeks and months.”
It starts to become confusing or unclear (depending on your perspective).
Suppose you are a rational, thinking entity capable of brushing your teeth and putting butter on toast.
For a person with these qualifications, it’s confusing because one would have expected a person serious about their “fiduciary responsibilities” to discuss these “facts” over the time they came to light. Like over the course of their term.
Minimally you would have expected a discussion of these facts to occur when the decision not to reappoint Liza was made in a public meeting.
And while it may not have passed the smell test, you would have at least expected these facts to come to light in the two articles published by the folks whose vote is now under scrutiny in the days after the vote in response to the public backlash.
Why are these facts, which were immediately acted upon, still a mystery weeks later?
Because the narrative is very likely still under construction. If you suspend the rational part of your brain and swallow a few of those “Berkeley Heights Logic” pills, the conclusion you will arrive at is this:
There is now a frantic effort to pore over every single thing Liza did during her tenure to construct a spun narrative that seeks to justify what occurred at the last town council meeting.
This is not responsible government – it’s reactionary political gameplay that seeks to sacrifice a competent and effective administrator.
