Preliminary Results on 2023 Proficiency for the Berkeley Heights Public School District- Math, Science, ELA and Algebra I

Education

Results on the NJSLA have become recently available.  Here is the text of the email I sent to the Board of Education on this data.

I looked at the raw data on the NJSLA results for Spring this year and completed a year-to-year comparison.

A few notes:

  • This is a preliminary report of the data – I am not aware of what the DOE does (if anything) to refine the data for the performance reports it publishes based on this data. The 2022 report was published in April of this year. If and when 2023 gets published, that report would take precedence – this is more of a check-in.
  • There may be cautions to this data, AND this specific data set is limited as there is no comparison to similar schools on movement. For example, Berkeley Heights demonstrated improvement on the NJGPA; however, knowing that it is of little value, we still need to learn how we would have fared on the original cut score and how we performed compared to similar schools. When the performance reports get published, we should better understand where we stand. We can do this comparison ourselves with the available date, but it is super laborious.
  • The data tables available through NJ Spotlight are incomplete and do not include all elementary school grades (only 4th grade was available for Berkeley heights), nor do they include Algebra I. The following screenshots are based on the (sort of) raw data available on all grades testedSource
  • Neither the spotlight tables  nor the raw data appear to provide District Wide results which we used in our comparisons last year.  Again, a super laborious process I can do but I would prefer to wait for the NJ Performance reports

ELA:

We appeared to have made significant progress on the overall gap due to a considerable bump in Hughes and GL students’ performance. Mountain Park experienced further decline, and CMS remained relatively stable. Overall, we still need to catch up to where we were in 2019.

Math:

We also improved in math- still not where we were, but a little closer.

Science:

We have not experienced much overall improvement in this area. GL and CMS did better, but Mountain Park appears to have slipped.

Algebra 1

Modest Improvements appear to have occurred – we are still below where we were in 2019
