The Town Council meeting, 1/23/24, opened up with the citizens hearing on agenda items only and no residents had comments on agenda.
Committee Reports followed and, for the most part, it was business as usual. Items of note are that the Sherman Avenue revitalization project is in the works and the primary purpose of this project is to make the township more accessible and more walkable.
At this time, there is no plan to use tax dollars to help fund this project. Several grants have already been submitted for areas regarding recreation, supporting the fire department and to combat lantern flies. Restoration of the historic farmstead property has begun and the committee is starting discussions regarding the preservation of the Bell Labs as a site of historic significance.
A proposal from the Army Corps of Engineers to construct a dam at the lower part of Watchung reservation is being opposed by the Environmental Commission and Mr. Couto.
The Mayor reported on two new committees for the township; Mayor’s Wellness Task Force and the Veteran Affairs Committees.
During the citizens hearing a minor residing in the Township shared an account her family’s experiences over the last few months, she was admired for her bravery in speaking.
