Resident Writes To Board On Traffic & Safety at Woodruff

-Cathy Marshott

In the last BOE meeting much focus came from the feedback of about 10 parents in connection to courtesy busing and high school students. What many parents don’t realize is that there is a severe need for enhanced bussing in our middle, elementary and K-2 schools. The decision to lower subscription busing costs for families will help everyone. Could you imagine your young child walking through the traffic in the clip at the bottom? Here is an email I sent to Mr. Nixon and the Board.

Greetings, Mr. Nixon,

I want to make you aware of a potentially dangerous traffic situation here on Briarwood Drive West. I live across the street from Woodruff School and in between the entry and exit of the school driveways. Drop off in the morning and pickup in the afternoon is somewhat of a nightmare situation. Traffic coming from the south (Ferndale) lines up to the right and closest to my driveway and the passing lane travels in the same direction next to that lane. If a vehicle comes from Springfield Avenue, they pass in the opposite direction in a THIRD lane. There’s been a huge spike in motor vehicle traffic since 2022, which is not allowing pedestrians to walk. Residents are basically held captive, unable to safely exit or enter their driveways during drop off and pickup time.

The traffic situation around Woodruff school is also impacting Ferndale and some parents have started picking up students there. Ferndale also has both lanes blocked leading to Snyder Avenue.

I have actually had to leave my driveway during pickup time, heading toward Ferndale and I almost hit a bus head-on because they were taking up the 2nd and 3rd lanes…..I was driving slowly but it turned into a very scary situation because I could not see the bus as I exited the driveway.

What if there is a medical or fire emergency? How would the EMT and Fire Dept. navigate through in time? Please look at my video attached.

Thank you
