Co-Teaching 2 different sections of Italian to 28 students IS acceptable…according to the district!

I received a response to my email regarding the unfavorable conditions being endured by 8th grade students (and single teacher) in Italian. You can read it in full below.

Reasons provided why this practice IS reasonable and acceptable are:

It’s been happening like this for over 23 years;

It’s the only way to keep Italian (like French, or, it seems, they are in trouble of being canceled);

Co-seating exists (not just for Italian, but this is evidently happening in other classes throughout the district) because of the natural tension in schools to provide multiple opportunities for our students.

Nothing in the response is unreasonable, perhaps only the perceived tone as if I am out of line for thinking this was problematic or bad practice. The issue, for me, is the lack of communication regarding some programs being run unlike others. There was no denial of inequity. When it comes to our kids, all of them, I will continue to ask and look at ways we can improve – we should all be focused on being better.

It does seem, however, that my email was the first indication to anyone in the district that a co-seating class of 28 students is too much for one teacher? Really? Is anyone looking at class sizes and assessing which areas need support? Or, is this now on the shoulders of concerned and involved parents?
