Follow up to the 05/11/2023 BOE Meeting and Request by Dr. Foregger and Ms. Khanna that the Superintendent Address the Public’s Concerns
Since the BOE Meeting on 05/11/2023, I mailed the BOE Several times on the data that appears to be driving the decline in ratings and rankings.
If you recall, I emailed Dr. Varley last year with concerns about the DOE data from 2018-2019 (the last capture) asking for the same thing Dr. Foregger asked for last Thursday and got the same response- nothing much. Below are 5 photos that explain the problem facing our district along with the email exchange between my self and the BOE and the email exchange between myself and Dr. Varley last year.
The snap shot below demonstrates the change in the the percentage of students who met or exceeded the NJ Math Proficiency Target between 2018/19 and 2021/22.
There was a decline in all schools, the overall average difference was -10 percentage points.
The snap shot below demonstrates the change in the the percentage of students who met or exceeded the English Language Arts Proficiency Target between 2018/19 and 2021/22.
There was a decline in all schools, the overall average difference was -14 percentage points.
The snap shot below demonstrates the change in the the percentage of students who met or exceeded the Science Proficiency Target between 2018/19 and 2021/22.
There was a decline in 3 of the four schools, the overall average difference was -13 percentage points.
Lastly, during the last BOE Meeting, the Superintendent informed the Public that CMS was doing well on Algebra 1 and implied that it was a hinge point as to why the data was incorrect (again when you look at all the data that really does not appear to make sense). Here is our Algebra I snapshot:
The snapshot below demonstrates our overall summative numbers (which is driven in part by the data above) and our cost per pupil when compared to surrounding schools.
We have the lowest ratings and rankings among surrounding schools yet we have the highest per pupil cost.
This is likely the reason Dr. Foregger and Ms. Khanna voted to have Dr. Varley discuss the community’s concerns on this information at the next meeting. Joy Young, Robert Cianculli, Gale Bradford, Pam Stanley and Angela Penna either abstained or voted no. Afterwards, Angela Penna threw the issue into a committee the public does not have access to.
Ms. Khanna is the only BOE member who responded to the analysis I provided to the BOE thus far.
